Mining and the Gold Rush

In 1848 gold was discovered in Sutter’s Mill in California, a territory that had just come into the possession of the US. The gold rush that followed to this and other areas – including as far north as Alaska – supported a boom in the growth of Western settlements and infrastructure. This period can be explored in the Graff Collection through records of the towns and cities, guidebooks for potential emigrants, diaries of prospectors and accounts of the frenzy for gold
